Midnight Madness I & II
One of our favirote events of the year involves strolling under the stars, usually all bundled up from the cold stopping in as many places as we want to eat a bite or two. The eating and drinking is punctuated by shopping. It’s actually just enough of a walk from Maryland Avenue to City Dock via Main Street to work off your meal and be ready for all the cookies, hot chocolate and other goodies the many shops and galleries put on display for these two special evenings. T

Binging on all forms of chocolate whilst walking through the Arts District? I simply cannot think of a better way to spend a Saturday, and I know FOR SURE that this will satisfy #1’s idea of “fun time with mom”.
More than 55 regional artists will be offering artisan chocolates, honey, baked goods and more, plus handcrafted jewelry, original children’s clothing and accessories, pottery and paintings at the 13th annual fundraiser for the ALS Association.
The event will include door prizes, raffles, a silent auction, refreshments and an appearance by Lisa McCue, an illustrator of children’s books, including the Corduroy series. The ALS Association is the only national not-for-profit volunteer health organization whose sole mission is to find a cure for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (Lou Gehrig’s Disease).
Art, Drinks and Oysters
Amazingly talented local wildlife and Chesapeake Bay photographer Jay Fleming will be exhibiting my photography at Factors Row in Annapolis. Come out and enjoy oysters, smoked fish, and drinks from our great sponsors. Guest artist Will Hemsley will have original prints of his oil paintings available for purchase!
Enjoy quiet, old-fashioned fun on quaint Annapolis Street!
Stop by Rutabaga Craft Juicery for a healthy drink—a meal in itself. They also have salads and sandwiches. Or stop into Bean Rush Cafe, a true neighborhood meeting place, for snacks, desserts, salads, sandwiches, soups and of course, coffee.

ICE! Is a truly fantastic show that features dozens of hand-carved holiday themes sculpted from several ton-sized blocks of ice. This year’s theme is Santa Claus is Comin’ To Town. Don a special coat to enter the indoor show—besides the sculptures there is an ice slide that kids and adults won’t be able to resist. Weekends are especially busy but showcase specials like live ice carving and rides on the Capital Ferris Wheel overlooking the Potomac River from Alexandria to the Washington Monument. Be sure to memorialize the visit with a photo just outside the exhibit—red noses, rosy cheeks and those signature blue jackets make for great pictures.
Inside the huge, vaulted atrium is a hanging Christmas tree with thousands of lights, a fountain, a small train, gingerbread building, scavenger hunting, photos with Santa and much more.
Some activities are free, others require purchasing tickets or merchandise.
The Gaylord is located at National Harbor, a bustling shopping district with high end shops and dozens of eateries.
Eastport Yacht Club Lights Parade
The Eastport Yacht Club Lights Parade is truly one of Annapolis’ signature events. Every year on the second Saturday in December, magic happens on the waters of the Annapolis Harbor—boats suddenly appear out of the cold winter night, illuminated with thousands of colored lights and crewed by jolly revelers. Families and friends gather at their favorite viewing spots along the waterfront to see this yearly spectacle and to celebrate the holiday season together.
Best Viewing is on the Spa Creek Bridge, along the Annapolis Harbor, and vantage points along Spa Creek. Personally, I prefer to watch the parade from the windows of Chart House, Carroll’s Creek Cafe, or with gracious friends whose parties feature great wine, food and friendship (hint, hint ya’ll). It is ALWAYS a cold but beautiful night, so bundle up and tuck up something to warm you up, preferably a nice little toddy from Mills Fine Wine & Spirits.
Tim Devine, owner of Barren Island Oyster Company will be at Here, A Pop Up Shop during Midnight Madness.
Support your local watermen, enjoy oysters pulled straight from the bay…
